Boston Injury Lawsuit Alleges that Inadequate Security Allowed Sexual Assault to Happen at New England Institute of Art

A woman is suing the New England Institute of Art in Brookline for Massachusetts personal injury. The woman said that because of inadequate security at the New England Institute of Art, an intruder was able to go into her dorm and sexually assault her. Also a defendant is Anwar Faisal, the owner of the building where the crime happened.

The plaintiff said that a male who wasn’t a student at the institute sexually assaulted her after a security guard let the nonresident into the building. She said that the man tried to forcibly rape her in her dorm room. The man has since been arrested and charged with indecent assault and battery.

In her Brookline, MA college student crimes complaint, the woman says she sustained serious psychological and physical injuries, which has hurt her ability to work. She is seeking compensation for her injuries and suffering.

With one in five women sexually assaulted on U.S. campuses, it is important that there is adequate security to prevent rape and other sexual acts of violence from happening. Schools and other responsible parties can be held liable if they failed to create safety and prevention measures to lower the risks of sexual and physical crimes. Safety measures may include security desks at dorm and building entrances, proper lighting, campus security escort services, campus shuttles, surveillance cameras, and proper screening of security and other personnel.

Universities may also be held liable for their failure to protect a victim of sexual assault after the fact. Last year, the University of Connecticut paid close to $1.3 million to several current and past students to resolve allegations that the school mishandled their claims of sex assault and harassment. Other colleges have been sued as well, and dozens of educational institutions have come under investigation for the way they handled such cases.
